Job Shop 2013

Opportunities with new technology

The annual business meeting for AILU Job Shop members deals with topical subjects in the laser sub-contract sector. It provides an opportunity to learn, to network and to discuss the major issues of the day.

The annual ‘JS’ series of business meetings are designed to be of value and interest to laser job shops. In so doing, they facilitate trust between businesses that compete, in order for them to work together on topics of common interest or concern. The first of these JS business meetings took place in 2001 and never have they been more important than in these last few difficult years.

The strength and the benefits of the job shop group grows with the number of members we have and, as we did last year, we are inviting laser Job Shops who haven’t yet attended to come along and see for themselves the benefits of belonging to a friendly group of competitors.

The theme of JS 2013 is ‘Opportunities with new technologies’, as exemplified by the presentation on ‘Additive Manufacturing: Current capabilities and business opportunities’ by David Wimpenny of the Manufacturing Technology Centre, Coventry. Other presentations on laser marking and exploiting social media for marketing also address new opportunities for job shops. We are particularly pleased that Mark Beresford-Smith, the Chief Economist at HSBC Bank, has agreed to speak on opportunities in the UK economy; grant possibilities for job shops will also be addressed by HSBC.

The morning will end with a number of quick commercial talks on what’s new as well as the eagerly awaited overview of results of the 2013 job shop surveys, to be followed after lunch with an open general question and answer session lead by a panel of Job Shop owners – this year the theme will be ‘Opportunities for Job Shop’, including technological developments and issues of diversification. On the panel will be the Job Shop groups new Chair, Dean Cockayne, together with some of the JS committee and Mark Hutchinson whose company Hutchinson Engineers won the 2013 MTA award for ‘Most dynamic subcontractor of the year’.

It may sound odd to discuss business opportunities with competitors but those who have taken part in the past know that you can learn a lot without divulging commercially sensitive information. For example, we may compare: the financial services offered by our banks; variations in steel prices; or where to buy the cheapest lenses. Everyone involved gets useful information that may save him or her thousands of pounds. Sounds like an old boys network? – It is – come and join us! The day will be rounded off by an opportunity to tour recent developments at MSS including N2 generators and refurbished flatbed laser cutting machine.
